Denis Hogan - Racehorse Trainer and Jockey

Denis started out in racing as an apprentice with successful trainer Michael Halford at the Curragh gaining a lot of knowledge. The Dark Flasher was his first winner on the flat at Killarney in 2003. Denis’s career really began to take off when he switched to jumps and moved to the legendary Charlie Swan. It did not take long for Denis to register his first winners and he notched up 7 in his first full season over jumps.

For the next five years, Denis had a very successful association with Charlie riding many winners. In 2009 Denis seized the opportunity to take over Boherna Stables and set out Training himself.  In his first season training he had two winners and has steadily increased the number of winners ever since, with the current tally for 2016 being 18 (9 Flat and 9 Jumps). The riding did not stop when Denis started training, in fact, Denis is fairly unique in combining training and riding over the jumps with the occasional flat ride. This arrangement means Denis can provide invaluable feedback to owners and allows Denis to place the horses to great effect.

Racing in Ireland is very competitive and it very easy to spend a lot of money at the sales only to end up with a very modest horse. Where Denis Hogan Racing prides itself is the Prize Money won per Money invested at the Sales. Some recent purchases include Jack The Wire for 15,000 Euro, after winning his bumper impressively he went on to win at the Galway and Killarney Festivals amassing 50,000 Euro in prize money in his first full season. The other current stable star is Tithonus, purchased for 4,200 Euros at Goffs in 2014, he has won 6 races in 12 months including a Premier Handicap at the Curragh improving from a Rating of 50 to 87. The other area where Denis excels is improving older horses. A good example is Luke’s Benefit, Denis got the horse at the ripe old age of 9 with his highest winning mark being 104, incredibly he won as 12 year old off a mark of 117!

In 2015 Denis expanded from Boherna, setting up a second training yard at Cloughjordan with state of the art facilities. Denis is a very syndicate friendly trainer and with competitive training fees, there are horses to suit all budgets.
